Celler Cecilio winery

Celler Cecilio is a true legend of Priorat. It was founded in 1942 by Cecilio Vicent, the first winemaker to officially register his winery with the newly established D.O.Q. Priorat appellation. Today, his son August Vicent continues his legacy. The winery is based in the village of Gratallops, at the heart of the region. Its philosophy is simple: respect for tradition, minimal intervention in the cellar and the clearest possible expression of terroir. L’Udol, meaning “the howl”, is a tribute to the wild and untamed landscape of the Priorat hills.

Cecilio did not want to become just another producer of the powerful red wines for which the region is renowned. Instead, he focused on an authentic expression of terroir, including through white wines, which remain exceptionally rare in Priorat and account for less than 5% of the region’s total production. His vineyards are scattered across steep slopes at elevations of 350–500 metres above sea level. They are planted predominantly with old bush vines trained in the traditional gobelet style, known locally as en vaso, and cultivated without irrigation.

At the heart of the winery are its distinctive llicorella soils: dark slate threaded with quartz, forcing the vine roots deep into the rocky bedrock in search of water and minerals. This geological character gives Celler Cecilio’s wines their unmistakable mineral profile—the “stony” signature present in every glass. The winery remains small and family-owned, with production deliberately limited. Each bottle is the result of meticulous manual work, from tending the vineyards to harvesting and vinification. Cecilio Moreno believes that great wine is made in the vineyard rather than the cellar, a principle reflected in his minimalist approach to winemaking. L’Udol Blanc is one of his most personal wines: a quiet yet eloquent expression of Priorat’s ability to be every bit as compelling in white as it is in red.
