Mare Santo is a small private winery with heritage and tradition located in Slovenia's Goriška Brda wine region. Mare Santo grapes ripen in high-quality soils on the green hills of Goriška Brda, where warm Mediterranean air meets cold Alpine wind. This wind caresses and shapes the grapes, giving the wine its distinctive taste.
The winery is best known for producing sparkling wine that is unique thanks to aging 20 meters below sea level. Why the sea? Where did this idea come from? It was created by renowned Slovenian winemaker Igor Tomažič, a passionate man devoted to perfection, inspired by old Slovenian customs. In the past, wines in vineyards were cooled in streams because there were no refrigerators. Sometimes a bottle was forgotten there until spring or the next season. During that time the forgotten wine changed, and locals greatly appreciated its refined taste. Tomažič took the idea a step further and began submerging bottles in the nearby Adriatic Sea.
